The Life-Changing Wins We Celebrate

Meet some of our stars. Their journeys will inspire yours.

Where Grit Meets Growth | Al Dur Raqip Petersen’s Journey

When Al Dur Raqip Petersen first joined our ECD Sports and Movement Programme at four years old, no one could’ve guessed how far his tiny footsteps would take him. Fast-forward five years, and this nine-year-old isn’t just playing soccer; he’s rewriting what it means to chase a dream.

Al Dur’s story started with pure curiosity. Week after week, our coaches watched him light up during drills, his eyes glued to the ball. By age five, he was dribbling circles around kids twice his size. “He’d stay after practice, asking, ‘Can we try that again?’” recalls Coach Liam. That stubborn determination paid off. By seven, he’d earned a spot in our elite soccer academy and where his knack for reading the game left even seasoned players in awe.

But here’s the twist. More than just making him a better athlete, soccer made him a better student. His mom, Aisha, laughs as she shares, “Last year, he told his teacher, ‘If I can juggle a ball 50 times, I can memorise my times tables!’ Sure enough, he did both.” Teachers now call him the “classroom captain,” praising his focus during group projects and his habit of cheering on struggling classmates.

Ask Al Dur his secret, and he’ll shrug: “I just keep trying until it clicks.” Whether he’s mastering a new kick or tackling math homework, that same fire drives him. Last season, he led his team to a regional championship with a last-minute goal that’s still talked about at practice. “I pretended the net was a dragon,” he grins. “Had to slay it!

What’s next? Al Dur’s already eyeing goalkeeper training (“They’re like superheroes!”) and wants to coach younger kids someday. “Everyone deserves a team,” he says.

His journey proves something simple but powerful. When kids get the right mix of play, guidance, and grit, they don’t just grow… they soar.

From Fussy to Fearless | Matheo’s Transformation

Picture it. A tiny two-year-old Matheo, cheeks flushed, clutching his dummy like a lifeline, sobbing through his first day at our ECD programme. Fast-forward three years, and that same boy is sprinting across the field, grinning wildly as he nails a soccer drill with no dummy in sight, just pure joy.

Matheo’s journey wasn’t instant magic. For weeks, he’d toddle into sessions with tears streaming, his dummy his only “teammate.” But our coaches never gave up. Slowly, curiosity replaced the tears. One rainy Tuesday, he shocked everyone by voluntarily dropping his dummy into his bag to chase bubbles during a motor skills game. “That was the day Matheo decided bubbles were better than comfort,” laughs Coach Zara. “We knew he’d turned a corner.”

By age four, Matheo wasn’t just participating but thriving. Ball skills? He’d practice kicking foam blocks into laundry baskets at home, shouting “GOOOAL!” (even when he missed). Balance beams? He treated them like pirate planks, arms flapping for drama. His mom, Elena, tears up recalling his first solo pyramid climb: “He yelled, ‘Look, Mama! No hands!’ and I nearly dropped my phone.

Now five, Matheo’s a pocket-sized powerhouse. Last month, he taught a shy new classmate how to dribble a ball, patting their shoulder like a mini coach. “Sharing is funner than crying,” he declared. His dummy? “That’s for babies,” he shrugs. “I’m busy being a soccer king.”

Matheo’s story is about more than skills, it’s about swagger. From timid toddler to confident kid, he proves that with patience, play, and a little pirate-style imagination, every child can rewrite their story.

From Fighter to Leader | Joshua’s Journey

Let’s rewind to 2023 when Joshua stormed into Disa Primary School with fists clenched and a reputation for chaos. Teachers braced for meltdowns. Classmates dodged his temper. By lunchtime on day one, he’d already sparked a fight over a soccer ball. Fast-forward a year, and you’ll find that same Joshua calm, capped with a prefect’s badge, and breaking up arguments before they start.

The turning point? Our physical education programme. Coach Thabo spotted raw potential beneath Joshua’s anger. “I challenged him,” Thabo recalls. “Told him, ‘You’ve got two choices: Keep punching walls, or punch goals.’” Joshua chose the latter.

He threw himself into drills, channelling his fire into perfecting push-ups and penalty kicks. But the real game-changer came when Coach invited him to assist with Saturday academy sessions. Suddenly, Joshua became a role model. “Little kids copied how I tied my shoes,” he says, shaking his head. “Felt weird… but good.”

Discipline replaced defiance. When a younger student lashed out last term, Joshua pulled him aside. “I told him my old tricks just got me detentions,” he shrugs. “Now I save my energy for beating Coach’s obstacle course records.

By mid-2024, Joshua’s turnaround stunned everyone. Teachers voted him prefect for his “no-nonsense fairness.” Peers nicknamed him “The Ref” after he mediated a cafeteria feud over stolen chips. (“Split the bag 50-50,” he ruled. “And do ten burpees for drama.”)

His mom, Lindiwe, still marvels: “Last year, I dreaded parent-teacher meetings. Now they show me videos of him leading warm-ups!”

Joshua’s secret? “The academy didn’t only teach me rules, it also gave me pride,” he says. “Turns out, keeping kids out of trouble’s way harder than starting it. But way cooler.

Joshua’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship and investment in young people’s lives.
